I made several images while doing today's Butterfly strip, to show my process. All of my work is photoshop + tablet.

1. This is my new template for the strips. It's newspaper friendly.

2. So then I sketch out the strip in gray on a new layer.

3. On a third layer, I start 'inking' the panels in black.

4. When I finish the inks, I take off the sketch layer (usually I just make it invisible).

5. On a multiply layer, I color in graytones.

6. I make a new white layer at half transparency before doing my lettering. This just makes it easier to see the words for now.

7. I draw in the word balloons on a new layer above the art.

8. And on a layer between the word balloons and the art, I add white to hide the art underneath. (And in this case, added in the hologram in the last panel, which I almost forgot!)

That's pretty much it. I end up with a lot of layers, but it preserves all the steps for easy corrections later, which is often valuable.

EDIT: Then I realize I had the font set too large and revise the final text. Wink

Wow, that's a lot like how I do my strip too. Granted mine doesn't come out as nice, but I'm new at this whole drawing comic stuff.

As someone who recently found the BFF Alliance and who does a webcomic as well (link at the bottom) I can appreciate the different techniques that each artist employs to get their ideas from the brain to the page. My own process is very similar to your own and the sketch layer you include gives me a few ideas for my own.

Keep up the great work and check out the Amazing Superzeroes (my webcomic)!
