Note: We’ve seen DC heroes reimagined for the modern day, but what about the modern day hipster? Artist Ferd Poblete makes our dreams a reality, and also throws in a bonus from the Marvel side of town. – Chris A.

Here’s what Poblete had to say about the designs’ origins:
I know the hipster thing is so last year… but it doesn’t mean we still can’t have fun with it! This started as a mini-project for myself to draw DC characters as civilians but still keep the distinctive costume elements to make them identifiable. The hipster thing just seemed a natural fashion style to base it on to tie together normally random elements of clothing not normally paired.

/ July 5, 2011I’d like to see these in color and since they have such defined outlines we can easily do our own! Actually I might print them out and let my 6 year old daughter color them.
Design wise these are fun but I’ve never really been able to figure out what a ‘hipster’ is exactly. I guessing by these pieces that all hipsters have some sort of glasses… That square cleavage window literally made me laugh out loud, love to see that pulled off IRL. I am most impressed by Scarlet Witch, it’s a nice take on her and you almost never see her redesigned unless it’s a scary version. Nice job.

/ July 5, 2011Needed an Ollie, Green Arrow is so freaking Portland. I’d also find it amusing if Clark was here since he’s worn hipster glasses since the very beginning.
I think PG’s “twindow” would have worked better as framed in by multiple articles: half-shirt on the bottom, blazer on the sides (shoulders already look like a jacket), scarf on the top.
Also, can this be Harley’s new look instead of the Juggalo Stripper outfit from the DC reboot, please? It captures her character so well – infantile, unbalanced, but with an intellectual core that her insanity can’t quite bury.

/ July 5, 2011Imagine a subculture of kind of condescending people who are obsessed with “irony” and being so trendy that they’re outside the mainstream. The kind of people who brag about what independent musical artists they like and then ditch them once a large number of mainstream people start to get into them. Those are hipsters.
Anyway, I think you got the look down, I can just imagine ‘Tanna being like “Please, I was into magic way before it was popular”. :p

/ July 5, 2011Yet more proof that the heart of hipsterdom is the avoidance of “mainstream” taste through the act of having no taste whatsoever.

/ July 5, 2011These drawings make me want to knock the caffe mocchiatos right out of their smug, self-absorbed hands… but I can’t deny the fact that these are some beautiful drawings.
In fact, I think a reboot of Zatanna as a young hipster magician would be fantastic. DC needs to source their ideas from the great work on this site.
Nice stuff!

/ July 5, 2011I love how all the characters are referred to by their first names only. It adds this little subculture-ey feel to it; you have to be a little in the know – “Ya, you probably have never heard of Power Girl’s real name”.

/ July 5, 2011Somehow had an image of a hipster Shulkie but more just a “mod-office worker” type with glasses, blouse (short sleeves obviously) and torn pants like “yeah, this is my casual Friday…deal with it”. Though…somehow I for a moment thought Wasp was Bumblebee for some stupid reason.

/ July 5, 2011Here we see another Redesign of Harley Quinn that it’s infinitively better than the one we’re stuck with

/ July 5, 2011Catwoman and Harley Quinn are frakking awesome. The rest are great too — though it’s totally unfortunate that “Cassie” appears to have been born without a ribcage — but those two look like hipster chicks for really realz.
Where is that guy who kept showing up on earlier threads shouting “You idiots! They look like hipsters!” There needs to be a bat-signal for that guy.

/ July 5, 2011(P.S. What an absolutely great touch that “Selina” has a Bat-sigil tattoo. It would be great to see a T-shirt version with more of her ink.)

/ July 6, 2011Yep. Those are indeed hipsters.
I guess they can fight people who spill mocha lattes on the counter.

/ July 6, 2011There’s no actual definition of a hipster. What someone thinks a hipster is says more about their own tastes, interests and concepts of fashion and culture than it does about the person they’re judging.
For example, some of these are great, but they don’t look anything like what passes for a hipster where I live. They look pretty dated, fashion-wise.
For the best assessment of hipsters and the people who spend so much time judging and hating those they perceive to be hipsters, I refer you to Kate Beaton’s comic:

Yeah, the stuff involving fishnets and thigh-highs especially, not so much. That’s why Harley and Selina work the best for me. And it’d be interesting to see what Steph wears when she’s not doing crafts in her bedroom, but she’s pretty American Apparel-consistent in the setting of the picture.
I think there is an actual definition of “hipster,” though: someone who is fashion conscious and therefore “hip.” All the more detailed definitions seem to involve loading up the “hipster” with observers’ insecurities, baggage and shortcomings, in which sense they’re basically the new “hippies,” but whatever. (I will admit that I just don’t get some people’s fixation on “lattes.” What is with that?)

/ July 18, 2011Hipster-accurate or not, I love these designs and the feel of the whole set. I’d love to read a mini-series about these versions.
