Superheroes, Redesigned

Call For Submissions for Fan-Art Friday: Nova!

Note: He flies, he’s super-invulnerable, and he’s gone toe-to-toe with everyone from Terrax to Galactus to the Dark Phoenix. He’s Nova. Created in 1976 by Marv Wolfman and John Buscema as a space-age homage to the plucky working-class hero Spider-Man, he’s gone on to be one of the leading stars in Marvel’s cosmic adventures. Whether you’re a fan of Richard Rider, the all-new Sam Alexander, or one of the various other members of the Nova Corps, Nova is someone worth talking about — and someone more than deserving of a Fan-Art Friday. Artists of all style, variety and skill level are encouraged to send us your rendition of the Human Rocket. For this Fan-Art Friday, the deadline for submissions is Tuesday, October 30 at 8am Eastern time. Email them to us at projectrooftop@gmail.com. To get you inspired, below is Shane McDermott‘s mythic rendition of Nova. – Chris A.

I appreciate the overall costuming theme for the spotlight Nova here. The helmet, sword, shield, chainmail, etc. it all works for me. And I appreciate the *slight* body-hugging fit around the limbs and head while leaving the torse shape defined by classic armored draping. No complaints there. Kudos all around.

One problem: the belt? It doesn’t seem to serve a purpose and it screams “JERK ME AROUND!” Show a scabbard attachment or get rid of it.

And yet, Nova has had worse luck maintaining a title (since that original run) than Aquaman.

  3. Yeah, Bruce B., if I had it to do over again I’d totally go with a different belt. But in my defense I was working with a Celtic/medieval theme and it was modeled after various authentic belts such as this: http://www.theknightshop.co.uk/catalog/images/120391-1.jpg

  4. Nova is my favorite comic book character of all time! I found this website a week ago and it inspired me to draw Nova in Centurion armor. Good shit!

  5. It saddens me that Nova was the only cosmic character not drawn by Starlin in his heyday…well, okay, Marvel Boy (Quasar) wasn’t either. With all the covers he did, you’d think that Gil Kane would have drawn him once, at least, but I sure don’t recall it. Poor Rich Rider, first he’s given a name that’d make a gay porn star blush, then many top tier artists of his founding era never draw him. Neal Adams? Nope.
