Redesign Rewind: Steve McNiven’s Ultimate Captain Marvel!

Note: For being the namesake of the House of Ideas, the the classic Mahr Vehl — Captain Marvel — never quite had a costume that lived up to his potential. In 2005, artist Steve McNiven re-envisioned the costume for the miniseries Ultimate Secret that played up his militaristic Kree roots with the green of Vehl’s original costume along with some more Power Cosmic-esque touches. Although this Ultimate version of the character never quite got his chance to shine (yet), the design is something memorable and unique.. – Chris A.

There’s nothing that needs to said about this. It’s a good, alien design that bleeds authority and power. Considering my distaste for the Ultimate Marvel line, that’s really saying something. I want to see this outfit more. Glad he made it into Avengers: EMH

happily, this costume is the version used in the now canceled (but awesome) Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Who was the first to have the “glowing holes” thing om their costume? I’m curious.

  4. That’s pretty bad ass.

  5. This is going to make me no friends what so ever, but this will always be the definitive Mahr-Vehl costume to me.

I always had a soft heart for Jim Starlin’s Captain Marvel. Same with his version of Warlock.

  7. Always loved this. I’d hoped that Ultimate Iron Man would slowly transition to something similar having been exposed to the tech, but instead he jumped from his (awesome) Hitch design into a standard 616 looking thing.

Wasn’t this the design they used for EMH too?

  9. A variation of this, but yes.

It needs nega bands, redesigned as they can be…

The less said about the design work on Ultimates 3 the better.

I always like the updated version that Steve did here. I especially loved the transformation scene.
