P:R Approved: Marco Checchetto’s Sleepwalker!

Note: When people think of 90s comics, their minds are often drawn to the rise of the Image artists or the death of Superman, but buried underneath those big stories is great stories and great characters. And now one of those is getting reinvented in an upcoming issue of Avenging Spider-Man #19. Artist Marco Checchetto was tasked to redesign the cult favorite dark hero Sleepwalker (originally done masterfully by Bob Budiansky), and he made Sleepy lithe, threatening — and frankly, demonic. I especially love the foreboding shadow concealing his face, and the sinewy maw he reveals when he opens up his mouth. – Chris A.

  1. I had heard reports that Sleepwalker was coming back in Avenging Spider-Man and the 90s fanboy in me squealed with delight.

The character kind of has a ridiculous premise, but there wasn’t any reason why he couldn’t have been used as a supporting character. I really would have liked to see what Bendis could have done with him during that entire arc where Dr. Strange was no longer Sorcerer Supreme.

I like the redesign a lot. Got rid of the bug-eyes, which I think made him look more alien and less ethereal.

  2. This looks great! I was a big fan of Sleepwalker back when he first appeared – even got my first fan letter printed in #3.

There are not a lot of major changes here, but I think the differences are all for the better. The raggedy cape & loose wrapped fabrics, along with the dark shadowed cowl really help create the feel of a mysterious, unfathomable & creepy entity.

And that open maw! Reminds me a little of the Dementors from the Harry Potter films. I’m also glad to see he is not a muscle-bound, barrel chested superhero like the original… the slim physique is perfect.

  3. Good Stuff!! I have always been a fan of Sleepwalker. He and Darkhawk were two of my favorite characters to come out of the 90’s. I love this new look and I really hope they find a way to make him work.

  4. Awesome design, it’s like something out of my nightmares, and that makes for a very effective character from the world of dreams

  5. Wow, this brings back memories. This is a great example of how to slightly tweak and tighten up an old design and update it for a new audience and old fans alike. It’ll be interesting to see what they have planned for this character.

  6. Loving this design! It’s so creepy and ethereal, perfect for the character. I hope this is how he turns out in the book because the cover looks more like the traditional Sleepwalker. Either way, though, I’m in!

  7. I’m glad to see Sleepy thinned down, too. When Blevins started pumping him up, and Sleepwalker started to look like the Hulk, I felt it lost part of the coolness of the character. The idea of this skinny alien with weird eyes, crazy strong and warping the world around him with his eyes… too awesome.
