P:R Approved: Marvel’s Modern Drax The Destroyer!

Note: Marvel’s Drax the Destroyer is carving up aliens and enemies alike in the new Guardians of the Galaxy series, and it recently came to me just how great his current design is as compared to the retro-superhero suit he wore for most of his life. This bare-bones redesign of Drax first appeared in the 2005 Drax The Destroyer miniseries illustrated by Mitch Breitweiser, but I haven’t been able to confirm if it was Breitweiser who did the redesign. Although that’s still a mystery, this great panel by Michael Avon Oeming from a recent issue of the Guardians of the Galaxy Infinite Comics shows just how simple and iconic it can be. – Chris A.

  1. The red spiralling tattoos/markings remind me a lot of Kratos from the God of War videogames, which also came out in 2005. Any chance this design was inspired by it (or vice versa?) Needless to say, it looks a lot better than his original togs :)

  2. When the look first appeared durring Annihilation Conquest, Drax mini-series prologue I didn’t have a problem with the look, so much as how much he was de-powered. But I got to like him. The fact that he’s basically a tactical genius, and very resiliant to injury and seriously dangerous at hand to hand combat or with any weapon just makes him badass. The look works!

  3. It’s much more befitting of a character named Drax the Destroyer than his original costume. He looks more barbaric and in tune with what a character named The Destroyer would, and should look.

  4. Can he get the skull belt back. I know it’s cliche, but I really feel like it would add to his appeal considering he already kinda looks like a pro wrestler. I will say this, for some characters, just wearing pants is enough

  5. I look at both designs and can’t help to imagine that a carefully designed fusion of both would make the character 4 times more awesome.

  6. The mini-series where this new look debuted gave me chance to take a second look at Drax and I definitely likes what I saw. The bare chest has served him well since. It’s such a simple design that it makes him look much more formidible than his old one. Like a true force of destruction.

  7. To echo Thomas Fummo’s point, Drax’s redesign reads too much like “Green Kratos” to me. Since it is unconfirmed if Mitch Breitweiser is responsible, I’d also be interested in a follow-up investigation of the heavy God of War similarities.

I thought the same thing, I was completely unfamiliar with the original costume, and when I saw it “Oh dear” and “that belt though…” went through my mind simultaneously.
