P:R Approved: Dave Johnson’s Micronauts!

Note: In addition to being comics’ resident high roller in terms of comic covers, Dave Johnson has a busy day job as a designer for animation. And as part of that he was asked once to take the popular 1980s toy-turned-Marvel-comic Micronauts and reimagine it for a animated series. The pitch never got much farther than this due to Hasbro selling the rights to J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot as a potential feature film, but man… what could have been. – Chris A.

  1. That’s pretty awesome. Not sure why the feature film rights would be tied to the animation rights, though. I would think Hasbro is smarter than that.

  2. Yeah, I don’t know that any of these improve on the originals. They’re nice enough as animation designs, but not very revolutionary.

  3. Chris A.: Tbolt: No, Bug was a character Marvel introduced — and keeps the rights to. That’s another character, created to fill that void, called Dit-Dat.

which one? seems like the green guy with the staff fits the Bug appearance better, needs Microtron, too.

  4. I think the green character with the staff may be Pharoid. The wrappings on the arms say “mummy” to me. Also, I believe the yellow female is probably Time Traveller and not Marionette from the comic or maybe a hybrid of the two. There was a yellow version of Time Traveller in the toys and all the Time Travellers sported chest pieces similar to the one she’s wearing.

  5. I just read the Comic Book Resources article on Dave Johnson’s unused Micronauts designs which stated that the yellow character is indeed Time Traveller.

  6. Considering how good these are, and how different the style is to Johnson’s more familiar work, I’m adding them to my overburdened dossier marked “Proof That Dave Johnson Was Placed Here By Aliens To Make The Rest Of Us Look Like Chumps.”
