RetroFix: Delsante & Izaakse’s Spacehawk

Note: When the Project: Rooftop community finds a forgotten hero or villain in need of a rescue, it’s time for a RetroFix. This month: Spacehawk! Our guest artist is Sean Izaakse! – Vito Delsante

Who was the  Spacehawk?

“Spacehawk had but one mission in life — to protect the innocent throughout the Solar System and give out the occasional gruesome fate to vanquished evildoers such as aliens and space pirates like his childhood friend Galar. He lived in an unspecified future where space travel was commonplace. He was sometimes assisted in his war against evil by Captain Dakk, a police officer and friend of Spacehawk. (At some point in his run) Spacehawk arrived on Earth in the 1940s, centuries before his time. He also fought a few Hitler proxies until the United States entered World War II and he took on Hitler himself.”

Why Spacehawk?

Vito: As creators, we’re used to seeing a blank piece of paper (or a canvas, or even a computer screen), and seeing a world of possibilities. Spacehawk, a character that appeared in 38 comics, is, from my point of view, a blank slate. Created by Basil Wolverton (a genius artist, in my opinion) in 1940, the character has a lot of potential. Cut to last November. I jumped into the 30 Character Challenge with a handful of characters, and figured I’d do some retrofixes at the same time. In the end, I made all of the characters open source, and entered all 35 of them into the creative commons. Spacehawk (or at least, my version of him) is no exception. So, the goal was to create a new version that took what came before with Basil Wolverton, but fill in the blanks for today.

Luke Cage by Ray-Anthony Height

Ray-Anthony Height

From the talented pencil of Ray-Anthony Height comes this redesign of Luke Cage, AKA Power Man! Cage is enjoying popularity and attention he hasn’t received in many years, if ever. Thanks to the mighty writing of Brian Michael Bendis, Cage is not only cool, but he’s also in demand; Cage will not only appear in the new New Avengers title, but also the new Thunderbolts. But, he lacks a costume. Let’s take a second to remember that Luke went from this pic on the left…to the one on the right:

Not much of a costume, right? Enter Ray Height. Now, on to the reviews! - Vito Delsante

Rachel: I’m not sure how I feel about the steel-toed wellies–I think something sleeker would have been a better match for the bodysuit–but the costume is pretty sharp. He looks kinda like a fighting game character, and it’s certainly no sillier than either of the canonical costumes pictured.

Vito: While he certainly doesn’t need the steel toes (what’s a welly?), it reminds me of Timberland boots, in a way. The only real issue I have is the “Cage” on his side. I prefer to call him “Power Man,” myself. But I love the color scheme and the chain motif.

Rachel: Short for wellingtons–rain boots, which are what those remind me of. You’re right that they’re probably closer to Timberlands, though, in which case the steel toe makes more sense.

Chris: I like how the guantlets and belt carry over the steel chain vibe from the original costume, but overall it’s a little bit too slick for Luke’s tastes IMHO.

Dean: Sweet (Christmas)! I think a half-step between his current non-costume might be an easier sell (maybe the top with jeans?), but I love the modified color scheme and return to costumed superheroing. But the truly brilliant bit here is the negative space chain icon hidden in the “C” in the “CAGE” logo. Very cool. The earring’s gotta go, though.
