Off-Duty: Kevin Wada’s X-Men!

Note: Showing that fashion isn’t just limited to their working clothes, Kevin Wada returns to P:R to show off renditions of Marvel’s new X-Men team. The X-Men never looked this good.  My question– where can I get Kitty Pryde’s shirt for my wife? – Chris A.

Kevin Wada on his illustration:

When the new X-men lineup was announced I, of course, thought it was amazing and refreshing and about damn time.  It wasn’t until a friend of mine brought the new team up again that the idea for another X-fashion developed.  It really was a “duh” moment for me – they’re ripe for a fashion piece, and not just because they’re women but because they are some of THE biggest female names of the X-men.  So I went for it.  Wanted something a little more dynamic than X-fashions of the past.  My main thought going in was more pants, less dresses and frippery.  Of course there’s still bling and heels – you can’t take away all the fun – but I wanted fashion that was a bit more street, more real, a little more badass.

Rachel is grunge.  Love her jacket, not so happy with her shirt.

Psylocke is NYC fashionista tomboy.  Dip dyed hair (so trendy) and a butterfly print blouse.

I’m really happy with Kitty’s dragon t-shirt and bad ass heels.  Had to get a shoe in there somewhere, people.

Storm is my 80s executive realness.  Her earring is fashioned after the one Willi Ninja bought (he has the receipt) in Paris is Burning.

My southern belle is in a loud print and hose – she’s the only one in a dress.  I wanted her in printed leggings but she was already such a patterned mess I decided against it.

And Jubes is just all over the place.  Bikini and hot pants and a bedazzled jacket.

Off-Duty: Hanie Mohd’s Captain Marvel In Formal Wear!

Note: Hanie Mohd. ‘Nuff said. – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Ronnie del Carmen’s Magik!

Note: Magik has always been a conflicted character, kidnapped as a child and raised by demons, she rejoined humanity but had found herself missing most of her childhood. Pixar animator (and great comics artist) Ronnie del Carmen recently revisited this Russian teen after re-reading the epic “Demon Bear Saga” from New Mutants. Carmen describes her as ” a teen trying to have a normal life. Except she can mess you up by bringing you to a corner of hell or vice versa.” Pretty apt. – Chris A.

Off-Duty: Yasmin Liang’s Martian Manhunter & Miss Martian!

Note: There are other suits besides your super-suits. And frequent P:R artist Yasmin Liang has taken DC’s resident martians and given them something dapper for their off-hours. – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Kelsey Michele Soderstrom’s Avengers-Inspired Dresses!

Note: T-shirts and other clothing inspired by superheroes has become a staple of culture these days, so why shouldn’t it extend to high fashion? Artist Kelsey Michele Soderstrom has taken the heroes of the Avengers movie and adapted their style into slinky evening wear dresses. In terms of fashion design and fandom this is gets an “A” in our book. Look below each image for Soderstrom’s stance on the designs. - Chris A.

On the Iron Man dress:

I mainly wanted him to stand in contrast to the more demure dress of Captain America, something that would translate both his suit and his flashy personality. i will admit to putting a lot more gold in it than his actual suit has, but i reeeeaaallly like the red and gold together!

On the Hulk dress:

Hulk went through SO MANY revisions. I decided on this dress for a few reasons. I liked the fluffy boa as a representation of his broad, hulky shoulders, and the asymmetry is supposed to reflect not only imbalance but the fact that his clothes basically get ripped to shreds every time Hulk joins the party. I also wanted it to represent in a way how banner relates to the Hulk; how Bruce Banner is such a reserved guy while this Hulk is just this darkness inside him.

On the Captain America dress:

Cap’s outfit was really fun, as I am absolutely in love with styles from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. (of course, 40′s is his era, but 50′s is my favorite, thus the more classic 50′s look). I maaay have overdone it on the stars, but whocaresilovestars. His mask was translated into the fascinator on her head, and his shield of course into her clutch.

On the Thor dress:

Of all my designs, Thor’s is maybe one of the furthest from his actual costume, but it’s one of my favorite. the cape is a supposed to be a sheer material. I really wanted a better way to incorporate the hammer, but the clutch is as close as I’m getting this time round.

On the Agent Coulson dress:

Coulson was really tricky, and I’m not sure if I’m absolutely happy with him, but oh well. Ii wanted to keep his dress as suity as i could without making it too businessy while still matching his personality and demeanor. His tie morphed into a tied necklace, and his love of Cap into the star in his hair. as an added bonus (my boyfriend’s idea), I gave him a Captain America comic to hold. silly, i know.

On the Nick Fury dress:

I loved the idea of putting him in a big poofy princess dress for some reason. it is partially inspired after My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic’s gala dress for Twilight Sparkle, though more so in the original designs for it.

On the Black Widow & Hawkeye dresses:

Both very much inspired by vintage looks, Hawkeye more from the sixties, while i was going with a more classic Hollywood with Black Widow (diamonds are a girls best friend, anyone?). For some reason, I see her being a really sharp-dresser, despite her wearing a dress I just haaaated in Iron Man 2. i really feel like her characterization in the Avengers is completely different than that original appearance, though.

Off-Duty: Katrina Navarro’s Robin of Earth 2!

Note: After a too-long absence, Katrina Navarro returns to P:R with two great takes on DC’s female Robin of Earth 2. After her last outing with her superhero-inspired outfits, I didn’t think she could top herself.. but she did. Katrina does these as designs for clothes she wants to make, but I’d love to see these show up in the comics themselves! – Chris A.

Off-Duty: Mark Bello’s Storm!

Note: She’s owner of some of the most diverse outfits in comics, and today at P:R artist Mark Bello takes Storm down a new route. Seemingly borrowing items from Wolverine and Jubilee’s closet, Ororo Monroe is rocking a new hairstyle as well as some new duds. It may not be practical for fighting super villains, but what about for a classic X-Men baseball game? – Chris A.

Off-Duty: Nate Bellegarde’s Hipster X-Women!

Note: Nate Bellegarde makes an overdue return to P:R today, continuing his Hipster X-Men series he started here last year. In this outing, Jubilee and Emma Frost are joined by Rogue, Storm, Jean Grey, Marrow and Kitty Pryde to give us a more laid-back hipster vibe. Bellegarde plans to have prints of these available this summer at Comic-Con International: San Diego, so be on the lookout! – Chris A.

Note: After giving us an after-hours version of Wonder Woman back in February, Hanie Mohd is back with a spirited rendition of the Wonder Girl. Great little piece. First person we find cosplaying this costume will get something special from P:R… so get on it! – Chris A.

Off-Duty: Hanie Mohd’s Wonder Woman Part 2!

Note: After wowing people with her skirt-wearing Wonder Woman last month, artist Hanie Mohd returns with a more grown-up Amazonian taking the star-spangled dress in a new direction. How about those bracelets?. – Chris A.
