Superheroes, Redesigned

Category: P:R Redesigns

P:R Redesign: Kris Anka’s Superman< Batman & Wonder Woman!

Note: Artist Kris Anka has fast become a favorite here at P:R, and while we wait for comics publishers to take notice of his costume design skills we take delight in showcasing his work done for fun. In this outing, Anka takes on DC’s trinity of heroes (Superman, Batman And Wonder Woman), in what he describes as a design intended for an animated series. Anka doesn’t shy away from the New 52 designs, merely simplifying them for animation and adding a bit of his own style when it comes to the body forms not unlike what Bruce Timm did. – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Erica Henderson’s Storm!

Note: Storm is arguably one of the stylish heroes in the superhero biz judging by the number of wardrobe changes she’s gone through over the years. And artist Erica Henderson returns to P:R with a design harkening back to Ororo’s roots, specifically to the Dinka people of Africa says the artist. She’s really showing off her goddess roots, and the hair is great! – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Jsm’ Captain Marvel & Family!

Note: Captain Marvel seems to be back on the minds of both Marvel and DC these days, and they’re not alone: artist Jsm has his own ideas about DC’s Marvel family. Instead of a full-scale revamp, Jsm took to simply doing a few tweaks in the costume of the heroes to prepare them for a new age. – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Mista-M’s Hawkman!

Note: Illustrated by a South African artist going under the moniker of Mista-M, this Hawkman design really solves many of the core problems the character’s costume has had in recent years. The full metal chestplate with the huge bird symbol really works here, and the metallic helmet seems like the next logical step for the feathered headdress previously worn. It does remind me somewhat of the Golden Eagle, but overall I’d love to see Hawkman in this suit ready for action.- Chris A.

Here’s what he had to say about the design:

Here I wanted to go for the adventurer meets warrior look hence the modern bottom half. I wanted to go for an Egyptian look but their armor designs (the few that I saw) didn’t do it for me so I designed my own to avoid the He-Man look Hawkman usually has. If I was in charge ancient Egypt would of had a league of their own comprised of Hawkman, Black Adam and Fate. The official back story of this character is too convoluted for my liking, rather than reincarnation I would have had the armor retain battle knowledge due to the nth metal properties but whatever. it also would have been cool if Carter had worked with the Batsons as well. Back to the actual design, I wanted to go for mechanical wings but it felt like overkill with the metal. The helmet was heavily influenced by the DCAU designs, I figure the helmet houses the rest of the costume like Dr. Fate. Forgive me for the belt.

P:R Redesign: Jason Reeves’ Milestone Heroes!

Note: Artist Jason Reeves returns to P:R today to show us the heroes of the Dakotaverse are not to be forgotten. Current DC hero Static is re-envisioned, along with Icon and Hardware, show a more progressive take on the Milestone heroes.  Reeves’ also wrote an elaborate text document to go with each entry that you can see at the link below each piece. With all the creativity on display here, I’m wondering what Reeves has in mind for the other Milestone heroes.  – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Michael Lunsford’s X-Men!

Note: Artist Michael Lunsford sent this in unannounced earlier this week, and blew out socks off (mine and Dean’s both!). Lunsford has revisited the inaugural class of Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters and given the group a modern day makeover. Lunsford gets bonus points for doing the costume variants for some of the members — the only thing I wish I could see more of is Beast in his original human guise before he went all blue. I like all of the designs, especially his take on Cyclops — the idea of hard armor over a more manageable cloth uniform is a great idea. – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Patricio Oliver’s New Mutants!

Note: Frequent P:R contest contestant Patricio Oliver makes his solo debut here today with his lively and drastic revamp of Marvel’s New Mutants. Taking a page from straight-up superheroes (with a dash of Legion of Superheroes I presume), Oliver has rethought a large part of the New Mutants family in this serious switch-up. While I can’t endorse all of the designs here, they do all possess an innate sense of fun with the challenge and I applaud that! – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Erica Henderson’s Classic Catwoman!

Note: Before Selina Kyle wore a cat suit, she wore her feline fandom in a different way… and artist Erica Henderson is revisiting those times in this updated look at Catwoman’s first costume. – Chris A.

George Kambadais’ Avengers Collection!

Note: Frequent P:R artist George Kambadais gave us a bring surprise when he emailed us last week. Unbeknownst to us, he’d been working on a revamp of Marvel’s Avengers line-up based on a suggestion from a fan. Go George go! – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Andy Trabbold’s Wonder Twins!

Note: They’re arguably the most memorable twins in super-hero comics, but they’re also one of the most strange. Originally created for DC’s late-70s animated show The All-New Super Friends Hour, artist Andy Trabbold gives the twins a more serious visage.  - Chris A.

Here’s what Andy had to say about the designs:

I wanted them to feel more alien but still keep the feel of Zann and Jayna. The colors are close to their original outfits but darkened a tad. The suits are similar but not identical- after all, they’re twins, not clones. In regards to the chest symbols: I always dug the idea that Superman’s S symbol is actually the symbol for the House of El that happens to resemble a human letter. I did the same here- the twin’s chest symbols are alien markings that resemble earth language letters.
