Superheroes, Redesigned

P:R Approved: Jason Ho’s Sons Of The Bat!

Note: Although they’re not related (save one), the Bat-family has in a way become the signature family unit in superhero comics — vying only with perhaps the Richards for that title. And artist Jason Ho has taken a deeper look at the many sons of the Dark Knight in a redesign set he’s titled “Sons of the Bat.” Ho did these redesigns as a experiment to dream up a hypothetical cartoon series, combining elements from different timelines and even different universes into one Elseworlds-style format that gets this fanboy’s brain reeling. Check out these great redesigns below, and then go over to Ho’s website to read his write-ups on each! – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Ulises Farinas’ Batman!

Note: You can imagine a variety of artists re-making Batman, but this redesign by Ulises Farinas is something special.Taking Gotham’s hero straight to the streets, this Bruce Wayne is even more self-reliant and even more resourceful than he’s ever been in comics. (Note: an earlier version of this post attributed this to another artist; we apologize.) – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Denis Medri’s Batman Beyond!

Note: Uber-hot P:R Regular Denis Medri returns, this time veering away from his redesign series to do a one-off of Terry McGinnis, aka Batman Beyond. This rendition of the future Batman has some tingles of Spider-Man 2099 to me, and I’m not complaining. I love the more demonic facemask and the sinewy openings in the neck, sides and biceps. This is a Dark Knight Gotham would definitely be afraid of. – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Chito Arellano’s Batman Beyond!

Note: After the bountiful crop of Batman redesigns in last week’s Fan-Art Friday, you’d think that well would be thoroughly explored. But in comes artist Chito Arellano. Arellano has given Batman Beyond‘s Terry McGinnis a more refined look like something you’d see in Alex Ross’ Kingdom Come work. As you can see, sometimes redesigning a character isn’t about re-doing everything, but merely fine-tuning and accentuating what’s already there. – Chris A.

Fan-Art Friday: Batman!

Note: Who knew one character could be envisioned so differently? The artists really came out of the woodwork and delivered some of the most unique and diverse interpretations of the Dark Knight I’ve ever seen. From hastily drawn sketches to masterful illustrations and even some photo art, this Fan-Art Friday can claim to be the varied depictions of one character while all being instantaneously identifiable as Batman. Which one is your favorite? – Chris A.

Call For Submissions for Fan-Art Friday: Batman!

Note: Everyone knows Batman by looking at him, but did you know he’s gone through more costume changes than virtually any superhero in comics? Although not so much a clothes horse, Bruce Wayne’s always adding and subtracting to his array of devices, instruments and weapons that make up his suit — and we thought we’d let Batman take a bow in our Fan-Art Friday free-for-all. Artists of all style, variety and skill level are encouraged to send us your rendition of the Dark Knight — be it one of his classic looks or you giving Batman a new look of his own. For this Fan-Art Friday, the deadline for submissions is Tuesday, September 25 at 8am Eastern time. Email them to us at projectrooftop@gmail.com. To get you inspired, below is Anjin Anhut‘s winning design for our 2009 Batman: Dynamic Do-Over contest. – Chris A.

P:R Regulars: Yasmin Liang!

Note: Not everyone can win our P:R contests, and in the array of runners-up and honorable mentions you see a sea of quality talent. Artist Yasmin Liang has been a fixture in our contests with DC heroes, placing as a runner-up in Aquaman: Sea Change, Batman 2.0: Dynamic Do-Over and Wonder Woman: Wardrobe War, and earning honorable mentions for both Canary on the Catwalk and Superman: Man of Style. She’s gone to have several of her pieces earn a solo feature here on the site, and we’re always on the lookout for more work by her in our inbox and online! - Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Joe H.’s Adam West as Batman “Year One”

Note: Most artists here use pencil, pen or digital devices to get their ideas out in the open, but Joe H. is doing his with fabric, thread and toys. Joe H. describes this as his “What If? Design” of Adam West-as-Batman from the 1960s, Year One style. Joe tells us “This is the Batman that cleaned up Gotham’s streets of all the big freaks like Blockbuster, Clayface, Killer Croc, Bane, Man-Bat and Hugo Strange’s Monster Men.” You can see elements of the later Adam West Batman costume in Joe H.’s design here, and its an interesting exercise re-examining that particular branch of batman continuity like this. – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Cary Polkovitz’s Batman!

Note: One of the most popular superheroes to redesign seems to be DC’s Batman, so it takes a lot to rise above the rest — but Cary Polkovitz does just that. In this entry he emailed us, the biggest visual change is in the cut of Batman’s mask, giving it a look more akin to Batman’s animal namesake. But don’t be focused too much on the headgear, as you’ll lose out on the other innovations Polkovitz brought to this, from the sleeve/shoulder cut of the top and down to the belt-less utility belt. The cut of the cape gives a hint at aerial maneuver applications, which could make for an even more imposing silhouette coming down on you off a Gotham building at night.. – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Denis Medri’s Justice League of the Wild West!

Note: We’re fortunate enough to have two major series of Denis Medri to showcase for you this month, and we couldn’t delay any more in showing this one for you. After bringing to you a rockabilly take on Batman and a steampunk take on Spider-Man, Medri has come back with a wild western rendition of DC’s Justice League. That Smallville farmboy Clark Kent looks right at home transported to this era, and his Green Arrow gone native is positively inspirational. – Chris A.
