Superheroes, Redesigned

She-Design/He-Design: Joe Phillips’ White Queen and Starfire!

Note: Some fans can’t get past the inherent sexiness that some superhero characters put on, and the trend of gender-swapping in superhero design really forces people take a second look at costume design. Artist Joe Phillips recently did a host of Marvel & DC superheroine costumes as if worn by males, and really innovated here in terms of making the costumes work on men.  – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Aaron Diaz’s X-Men!

Note: Most of the designs we show here are intended to fit inside existing continue, but some artists push the boundaries and re-create an entire character/title/team from the ground up. Today, popular P:R featured artist Aaron Diaz returns showing off his diverse and in-depth designs for an all-new, all-different take on the X-Men. We’re showing all the art here, and you can head over to his site to read his detailed pitch of the story surrounding his new take. That Apocalypse at the bottom is particularly impressive! – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Kevin Wada’s X-Men Coutoure Do “Vanity Fair”

Note: X-Men have always had a unique sense of style, but artist Kevin Wada has been taking that up a few notches with his series if fashion-focused X-Men portraits. And this new piece takes the cake, as he works up seven X-Women into a Vanity Fair-esque pin-up. – Chris A.

Here’s how Kevin describes each individual outfit:

From left to right:

Rogue.  Green high-waist pantsuit with bull shoulders, dark chocolate obi lacquer belt, hot orange gloves with powder blue stitching, rising flight gold earrings, gold-weave chest necklace plate.

Ms. Marvel.  Iridescent black/red bolt dress, Marvel star bangle, Ms. Marvel sunglasses, dark navy suede Warbird booties.
Emma Frost.  Pure white corseted leotard, lustre gun-metal stockings, baby blue darling heart belt, blonde ambition bangles, chastity pearls, blue chiffon wrap, diamond crochet necklace, diamond/crystal “fuck me” platform pumps.

P:R Redesign: Jamie McKelvie’s White Queen!

Note: P:R Original Jamie McKelvie returns to the site with a reinterpretation of the White Queen with an eye towards the classic. The X-Men: Season One artist has taken Frost back to a more refined time, and back to the roots of the Hellfire Club’s origin. – Chris A.

Here’s what Jamie had to say about the design:

A quick design, but the thinking behind it was: if she’s called The White Queen, why shouldn’t her costume be connected to that? With that in mind, I looked up a couple of Elizabethan outfits and went from there, while trying to keep it true to her origins as a member of the Hellfire Club.

P:R Redesign: Colin Alexander’s White Queen, Emma Frost!

Note: She’s become the queen mother of mutantkind, but she still retains the sharp edges from her life of criminal pursuits. Glasgow artist Colin Alexander brings us a new addition to Emma’s already buxom wardrobe with this surprisingly-non-revealing bodysuit (although that cape might be hiding something). – Chris A.

Here’s what Colin said about the design:

Emma Frost is a ridiculous paradox. She’s also one of my favourite X-men, so redesigning the character was scandalously good fun. Making the White Queen wear a practical uniform is a bit like taking all the baubles off a Christmas tree. Albeit a super rich, sexually overt, machiavellian Christmas tree. Capes, platform heels, inappropriate revelation of skin and a stiff drink. These are a few of her favourite things…

P:R Redesign: Kevin Wada’s X-Men Couture!

Note: While the main thrust of our site is to re-imagine super-hero wardrobe to replace what they have now, we’re also in love with fashion in general. Artist Kevin Wada has read our minds and come up with a series of illustrations putting some of the X-women in some high-class couture. Maybe the new Jean Grey School for Higher Learning has a fashion class Kevin can teach? – Chris A.

Marvel’s “X-Men: Evolution” Variant Covers Costume Cavalcade!

Note: Marvel really been thinking outside the box lately when it comes to variant covers. From last year’s Iron Man: By Design variants to its Tron: Legacy covers and now this. This series of covers, dubbed “X-Men: Evolutions,” hits the high points of costume design for a host of X-men as well as two notable villains. The stand-outs for me are the diverse array of designs for Storm drawn by David Yardin, as well as thinking about how many designs for Wolverine that didn’t make it into Patrick Zircher’s line-up. – Chris A.
