Superheroes, Redesigned

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s Mr. Freeze!

Note: Not since Mike Mignola’s excellent redesign in Batman: The Animated Series have I been excited to see a new look for Mr. Freeze. P:R Regular Kris Anka delivers the goods here, making a convincing containment suit for Mr. Fries that melds his earlier look with haunting science fiction ala Fringe. And Anka went the next level with the coloring choices, with the flat colors for the suit contrasting witht he glowing blue and the haunting red googles. – Chris A.

Here’s what Anka said about the design:

Continuing as part of the daily bust series, when I approached Mr. Freeze I wanted to create some form of visual simplicity with the characters. Because of the visual nature of his power (glowing blue colour) I felt he would look great with that as a visual theme. I added the “Tron lines” to help define the figure within a silhouette. He could be drawn with his entire body fading into shadow, but the lines and the helmet would still provide enough information as to what he was doing, and it would be a cool visual look which would also contrast his red eyes.

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s Ocean Master!

Note: People sometimes make jokes about Aquaman, but there’s no joking when talking about his half-brother Ocean Master. P:R Regular Kris Anka recently targeted Orm here in great new iteration of the Bob Cardy design. The buttoned cape has a certain regality fit for a member of the Atlantean royal family, and Anka’s reforged Ocean Master’s mask to make him less like Merman from Masters of the Universe and something more tyrannical and threatening. – Chris A.

We asked Anka about the design, and here’s what he said:

This was done as part of a series of daily bust redesigns. I attempted to adapt Ocean Master’s previous versions into something that wasn’t super corny that could actually be taken seriously as a villain. I adopted a lot from the Young Justice version, which I feel was the best out of his already existing designs.

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s Batman!

Note: Kris Anka doesn’t seem happy with things being great. He wants more. After turning in some great redesigns of Batman in the past, Anka is back at it; tweaking his designs, honing it to become something more. And I’m not complaining. – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s Harley Quinn!

Note: Harley Quinn has been DC’s scarlet sweetheart since she was first introduced, but her recent revamp in the “New 52″ has turned some people off Dr. Quinzel’s escapades. But this redesign by Kris Anka takes that original design by Bruce Timm with the more sexualized current design into something I could really get behind. And it’s a little thing — but the little wisp of hair poking out of her jester’s hat seems like something Harleen would spend hours on to make just right. – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s DC Female Super-Team!

Note: We’ve been proud over the years to highlight the work of artist Kris Anka. Years before Marvel took notice and made him one of their primary cover artists, P:R has spotlighted his excllent redesigns of popular characters. And now, Kris is taking his revisions of popular heroes one step further by making a bolsterous new team for the DCU comprised of some of that company’s greatest heroines. Anka hasn’t given them a name — but after Justice League and Justice League of America, why not just keep it simple and call them Justice?- Chris A.

Here’s what Anka said about the casting and the redesigns:

The greatest Team in the world.

Kate. Diana. Eve. Scandal. and Renee.

This started a few weeks ago from an idea I had when talking to a co-worker of mine at Nickelodeon. She and I were remarking how big fans we were of Kate and Diana and that lead to my realization that I would love to do a book with them, plus Eve.

From there I added Starling, because I remembered how much I loved her and the Secret Six.

and Renee, cause when Greg Rucka says a team needs Renee, you better add Renee.

Each costume was redesigned a bit too.

I made Kate a bit more formal. Heavily influenced by Yasmin Liang’s design.

Diana is more or less just a tweak of my older design. I definitely wanted  to keep the Greco Roman Grappler aspect of her. More Wrestler than like a knight. I also wanted to give her a short hair cut, but she ended up  looking better with an epic mane of hair.

Eve more or less is the same. I gave her a cage corset, just cause i like cage dresses. Made her slightly more fashionable.

Scandal I just wanted her too look more Ninja. nothing too large of a change. just some taste stuff.

and Renee, also didn’t have  too much of a change, just gave her a bit more of a designed coat, rather than just a regular suit.

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s Darkseid!

Note: Can I borrow someone’s time machine and make this the Darkseid design that DC kicked off the “New 52″ and the new Justice League with? Kris Anka does it again.  – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s Wonder Woman!

Note: It’s not the first time Kris Anka‘s taken on Wonder Woman, and hopefully it won’t be the last. This new rendition of Diana Prince shapes her up as a demigod and a warrior. Anka’s work makes the “New 52″ segmented armor work, while leaving room for the character’s own unique accoutrements.  Chris A.

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s Superman!

Note: In Anka we trust. This is Anka’s third iteration of his ideas for a Superman redesign, and he continues to impress. – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s Black Manta!

Note: Kris Anka makes a Black Manta that’ll make you scared to go swimming in the ocean ever again. – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s Supergirl!

Note: Kris Anka‘s grown by leaps and bounds from being a P:R regular to a in-demand artist for all the major American publishers, but here’s an offhand design Anka did for fun that a certain publisher should stand up and take notice. Taking a drastic step away from the more militaristic approach from last week’s Supergirl post, Anka took on the teenage fun of the character and also turned the cape into a more stylish looking addition to the wardrobe. – Chris A.
