P:R Redesign: Mista-M’s Nightwing!

Note: Carrying on with his winning streak, Mista-M returns to P:R with a back-to-basics approach to DC’s Nightwing. I still hold Brian Stelfreeze’s design as my favorite for Dick, but Mista-M manages to take that 1995-era design and make it more functional and practical. – Chris A.

Here’s what Mista-M said about his design choices:

I don’t know why they went with red for the new costume, but I had to take it back to blue (my favorite colour). I made his mask blue so that it doesn’t get lost in the black of his hair. I was going to pop his collar but it looked stupid so I went with a more formal look.  Since Nightwing is an acrobat and all that I figured he’d be doing a lot of rolling and tumbling, with that in mind I wanted his suit to be more protective than spandex. Hence the angular shoulders which have slight padding. This suit is a one piece so the belt is simply for gadgets and weaponry- the little loops obviously hold his sticks. The blue soles on the shoes were just a bit of flamboyance.

P:R Redesign: Mista-M’s Red Robin!

Note: The talented Mista-M returns to P:R today with a classic interpretation of Tim Drake as Red Robin. Taking bits and pieces from various renditions of Tim Drake and Red Robin over the years, he’s pulled it together with a few new ideas thrown into the mix. I really like the extra large eye-mask over the domino mask he’s wearing in today’s DCU. – Chris A.

Here’s what Mista-M said about the design:

Tim Drake seems to be the guy that wanted to be Robin forever, so rather than discard his Boy Wonder image like Grayson I think he would embrace it.  I wanted this to look like the Boy Wonder and Red Robin at the same time so I took elements from all Tim’s costumes. Discarded the Red Robin cowl but used the design for the mask to differentiate him from Robin (Damian) and Nightwing.  Kept the Red Robin tunic but added the clasps and pouches on the shoulders as a Robin throwback. I also feel that it gives off a sense of leadership. I love the Young Justice pants, I know it’s a different character but I felt it was a nice visual element and in this case served as a nod to the original Red Robin tunic while being modern.  I like the idea of him being able to glide but I couldn’t bring myself to give him wings, so instead the cape is made of memory cloth.

P:R Redesign: Mista-M’s Kid Flash!

Note: South Africa’s Mista-M is fast becoming a favorite here at P:R HQ. In this outing, the artist is taking on DC’s teen speedster Bart Allen, aka Kid Flash. I love the opening in the face mask to let Bart’s hair fly free, and giving him a backpack gives him some practical place to store his snacks as seen in Young Justice. - Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Mista-M’s Power Girl!

Note: After his debut earlier this month with Hawkman, we couldn’t help but highlight African artist Mista-M once again with another of his designs — a stunning take on DC’s Power Girl. He doesn’t shy away from the cleavage that Kara is known for, changing the so-called “boob window” into more of a low-cut top. The cape is unique, and I applaud the simple tribute to the Superman S-Shield with the belt buckle. – Chris A.
