Career Day: Chambara JLA

Note: Career Day is P:R’s column devoted to occupational, period, and conceptual redesigns of superheroes. Rooftop Regular and good friend of the site Alex Mitchell has sent us another period reimagining, this time of the entire “Magnificent Seven” version of Justice League of America (my favorite!) in Japanese sword-fighting movie style. Enjoy the awesome and check out Alex’s DeviantArt gallery for larger versions. – Dean Trippe

  1. I’ve been reading P:R for a long time now, and this is the first time I’ve ever been moved to comment – these are so amazing! Really impressive stuff! Amazing work, Alex.

  2. Oh man, every single one of these is spot on, the tropes are perfectly matched from the original heroes to their Japanese folklore counterparts.

The only one that bothers me at all is Chinese Mountain Monk. His staff and robes seem too.. (I’m trying to find the right word here) fancy?

  3. Oh, WOW. This is fantastic! I love every single one, and I love the details — the kanji, the designs, the textiles and fighting styles and the backstory reworkings. So awesome!

  4. The last two are missing, but daaamn, you’re good :D I was expecting some cliché anime stuff, and I got real Japanese heroes. Nice!!!

  5. Someone really knows their Japanese folklore and history. Green Lantern, for instance. Edo era policemen were known for carrying paper lanterns with them. It fits perfectly.

  6. @ John

DC already did something similar. It was an Elseworlds story called JLA: Shogun of Steel.

Batman is a woman in that story :)

  7. My heart! This is so amazingly awesome. I love the ‘mon’ on Lantern Bearer’s robe and how it’s actually just another version of the Green Lantern logo!

    I want more, more, more!

Black Canary! Hawkman (and Hawkgirl!) Zatanna! Maybe some villains? The Joker? Catwoman (Lady Cat Ninja!) Sinestro!

  8. also! I just caught how the serpent on Steel Man’s vest is actually just an ‘S’

    You, sir, are a genius.

  9. Pretty cool stuff here, bring on the bad guys! I’d like to see Darkseid, Cheetah, and Two Face for starters! Also on the Marvel wish list would be Spider-Man, Moon Knight, Daredevil, and Captain Amer…er…Japan!

  10. Nice! This was actually done in the Elseworlds graphic novel, “JLA: Shogun of Steel” it was pretty good.

  12. FYI Robin annual 3 from 1994 had an elseworlds story in Japan that is actually a bit better than Shogun of STeel IMO
Marvel released 5 ronin last year with deadpool punisher ect as sumurai in Japan but it sucked…
