P:R Approved: Nate Bellegarde’s X-Men!

Note: Gentleman artist Nate Bellegarde returns to the P:R parlor with this updated and slightly militaristic new take on the X-Men. Cyclops’ eye-globe is a beaut to behold! If you like this and want to see more, Nate’s started a unique thing on his blog where you can request him to draw specific things for a small fee. – Chris A.

  1. I like the concept of keeping the First Class “freaky”. I love what looks like one big eye on Cyke. Angel’s wings look more fleshy than feathered, and it’s gives it a more, again, freaky vibe. I also dig the fact they look more like dragonfly wings in flight.

  2. Fantastic! These designs are such a smart and slick mashup of the world in which these characters were created. Everything about them screams: sci-fi/cold war/silver age/espionage SUPERHEROES.
It’s like everything cool about ’60s pop culture rolled into one, and yet they could easily be on the pages right now.
And that’s the best Iceman I’ve ever seen. I love that he’s in a full costume, and not drawn as a snowman wearing a pair of “manties.”

  3. I dunno. I like them but I don’t at the same time. Love the dsign of the uniforms, but the Iceman, Beast and Angel designs aren’t right to me. Iceman’s cracked ice looks like a beard, and his mask just makes him looks strange, and the sleevless look doesn’t work on Angel. And Beast just seems TOO apelike. Maybe it’s just me.

  4. This is a great reworking of the classic X-men look. Only real problem is the lack of seams, how do they get those tights on? I’d like to see Cyclops blasting away and sleeves on Angel…maybe Beast can have the bare arms? Love the Marvel Girl powers in action and Icemans snow/ice look. Good stuff.

  5. Oh – one more question/observation … it’s cool how MG is even taking apart the shell (bullet) and is she even using a straw or just her power to drink the Coke?

  6. Wow! I love these. It’s kind of like a bad ass, S&M, Paul Pope-ish meets Mike Allred underground version of First class. I love the Werewolfian look on ICEMAN.

  7. Man, oh man! that is EXACTLY what the x-men should look like in a reboot. it’s perfect. Classic but modern in every way!

I feel like the gloves could either be fully yellow or not at all, but as far as character concepts go, these are top of the line.

  8. Eeeewww skin wings. That’s so awesome. Also like cyclops big honking eye and powers explanation.
The costume’s themselves are simple and effective without being under designed.

  9. These are awesome! Angel is my favorite. I love that his costume is easier to put on because of his wings and that he has goggles in his mask. That’s genius. They’re all really great though.

  10. I like it, I like it a lot. The only things I’m iffy about are the mask/frozen rabies froth combo on Iceman and Cyclop’s globe-eye. I think Iceman would be better served by changing the ice around his mouth to more resemble a beard or something, at this point is looks a bit like frozen spittle. And I kind of miss Cyke’s classic visor, I really like the concept of the globe-eye, but I’m just incredibly in love the classic visor.
And that Marvel Girl just oozes ‘tude, I wish the others conveyed that much personality.
    Anyway, great drawings.

  11. I can understand the notion of keeping a mammalian feel to Angel’s mutation, but I wonder if bat-wings wouldn’t have been more effective. The skin wings give the illusion and silhouette of feathered wings, but it strikes me as strange for strange’ sake.

Dig this team vibe, but for me, Angel could use a rethink.

  12. WHOA. Love the look of Angel’s wings, very unique! I also really really dig how Nate draws Jean, really awesome! Cyke’s face cannon makes him look so much more dangerous, but does remove a little of that always-in-control feel his visor gives, so i’m quite torn on that.

I LOVE the look of the costumes, though the yellow chest pieces do look unresolved at the moment, with the exception of Angel, perhaps because of his lack of sleeves. Iceman’s ice stubble/beard threw me off when I first saw it, but then I started to like how it looks freaky as opposed to the clean Iceman we’re so accustomed to.

  13. excellent redesigns, I’m assuming that Angel’d suit is sleeveless so he can pull it on over his head and guessing its backless too.

If “Angel” had bat wings, he never would have been named “Angel,” he would have been named “Batman.” The wings aren’t strange for the sake of it, and seem to have been much more carefully considered than your notion of using bat wings.

  15. This is really well conceived. I’m with most everyone else here in that it feels like there’s just one step missing with each of them, but it’s all relative, of course. As much as I hate the trend of seams-for-seams’-sake on most modern costumes, I think I’d actually like to see some on these suits. The total onesie bodysuit just seems a little odd to me. Love the full Cyclops dome, and the new, clothed take on Iceman. The frost on his costume is probably my favorite detail, though I’m not sold on the rabies-frost someone mentioned earlier. The only thing that really bugs me is Jean’s mask. It feels like an afterthought, and doesn’t really fit the team mask dynamic that everyone else is sporting.

  16. I really enjoy these looks, especially Angel’s MASSIVE and realistic wingspan. I’m not crazy about Cyclops’ mask, mostly because it resembles Validius (a monstrous villain who fights the Legion of Superheroes) a bit too much, and I really prefer designs where you can see Cyclops’ hair. Jean Grey’s attitude, and the disassembled pistol is great, but I’m not loving Iceman. He looks more like a crystal being than an ice elemental- I know its hard to differentiate that in a comic, but how about a shroud of mist around him, like dry ice fog, to indicate his intense cold?

  17. I’m cool with Beast looking ape-like, but not looking dumb. The man is a genius, and that ought to manifest in his character design.

I have no other complaints, especially not with the Cyclops redesign. Thank you for sharing this.

  18. I find it funny that people try to dismiss seamless designs as impossible in the age of sonic stitching, hyper elastic materials and so on, on a team who has a personalized black-bird under their mansion base…

  19. I’m not super digging the Iceman design, but the costumes generally are great, and those Cyclops, Angel and Marvel Girl designs are so goddamn hot I can barely stand it. Great work.

  20. Absolutely outstanding. The individual illustrations have a lot of character and substance, the colors and linework work really well together, JEAN GREY my god, brilliant. I love it. Cyclops’ helmet makes him seem more the silent background character than the take-charge leader but I applaud the incorporation of a more traditional cyclopian mono-eyeball motif.

  21. Tice with a J: I’m cool with Beast looking ape-like, but not looking dumb. The man is a genius, and that ought to manifest in his character design.I have no other complaints, especially not with the Cyclops redesign. Thank you for sharing this.

But that’s always been the astounding thing about Beast to a lot of people in universe. He looks like a giant lumbering oaf, but he’s erudite. That contrast is what makes him amazing. Think of him acting kind of like the Caveman from Freakazoid. Seeing this guy that looks like a gorilla stand upright, put a hand to his chest and say in the most Boston accent you can think of “I subscribe to the New Yorker”. It’s awesome

  22. This Beast is really an ape-like beast as he should be. I don’t really like the rest of the designs, but the idea of Iceman skating is perfect (although not original if you have seen the Incredibles’ Frozone)

  23. all these are spot on. excellent work. The only thing is i think they need more realistic uniforms, kinda like the After Earth (will smith wore in the ship) or Sheild Uniforms…
