Fan-Art Friday: Damian Wayne/Robin!

Note: Last month we announced Fan-Art Friday: Damian Wayne/Robin, and now the time has come to show off the art that came flying into the P:R mailbox. We’ve got previous P:R contest winners like Mike Dimayuga, long-time P:R contriubutors like Sebastian von Buchwald and Rick Vo and some new faces to boot. Thanks to everyone for submitting — tell us what you think in the comments! – Chris Arrant

  1. Wow, so many great pieces in here, but that Sebastian von Buchwald piece is just nuts. Want that as a poster pls Sebastian. :)

  2. Lots of fun having the opportunity to become more familiar w/ another Robin. Some great submissions this go-round, and thanks for the love!

  3. Lots of good art here. I’m not surprised they used Nelson Hernandez’s picture as the opener as it’s one of the strongest images here, matched only by Sebastian von Buchwald’s awesome entry. My other favourites are: Daniel Fu (lovely sense of action), Thomas Fummo (love the quirky, decorative style), Nicola Williamson (wonderfully stylish graph image, and a great idea to boot), R’john Bernales (DC needs to hire you), and Paul Reinwald (really nice naturalistic image). Everyone did great, though , not just the people I mentioned.

  4. I really, really appreciate artists like Ryan Cicak and Adam Murray choosing to depict Damian Wayne as if he is actually part Middle Eastern, or at the very least half non-White.

The guy’s grandfather is Ra’s Al-Ghul, I sincerely doubt he’d appear to be as pasty as he does in the comics.

  5. First time on the site… Glad to have been posted and to get a mention in the comments (thanks, Andy!). Aside from the ones already mentioned, I think Tom Kelly’s is graphically fantastic. Kevin Gemser’s are great, too.

Andy, your painting looks like me. It’s weird. But cool :).

This site is brilliant. Love the concept.

  6. Phew! So I did make the deadline after all :) As usual, some really great takes on the character here. I love Fan-art Fridays, especially when they focus on a character I’ve never cared much about: they help you look at him/her in a different light. Great job everyone!

  7. Awesome! Thanks again for the opportunity to show our art! I love this site! Lots of fun and funny pieces. There are some charming ones and cute ones. Also great that there’s some new artists to discover here!

Evan actually means to complement Tyler Hostettler and Michelle Chan, but he’s looking at the wrong name and matching it to the images below them.

  10. Erik Nelson: Wow, great job everyone.I am particularly fond of Brandon Redenius, Joe Bucco, and Paul Reinwand.Again amazing work this month!

Thanks Erik! Funny story, Paul and I went to high school and had art classes together. LOL.

I’m so pleased to see my art among so many fantastic entries!

  11. Dimayugas design is exactly what a redesign should be. A sleek, Comtemporary and functional design. Excellent.

None of the others blew me away though, especially compared to the Thor and WW Fridays.

    Wow. Tough crowd. lol.
Fan Art Fridays are just that, fan art. Just tribute art to the chosen character. Maybe Damien doesn’t inspire the artist’s that much this time around. As far as redesigns, it’s not necessarily the point of the Fan Art Fridays, but I gather they are always welcome.
Can’t speak for everyone, but for me it was just about fun… I had an idea and executed it. I like Damian, and just wanted to do a simple illustration depicting how I saw him.

  13. Wasn’t a fan of the charcter at first but her grew on me during Batman and Robin. He had a lot of potential. These were very very good.

Mike Dimayuga’s pic is just heartbreakingly heroic and touching. Love Nightwing on the gargoyle.

The alternate designs of Anthony Farrar, Tyler Hostettler, Kevin Gemser, and Sebastion Von Buchwald are just fantastic re-imaginings.

I’m actually surprised we didn’t get more incarnations of Damian as future Batman.

  14. Nelson Hernandez: ompared to the Thor and WW Fridays.

I understand that FF isn’t just about redesigns but as that is the theme of this site and I was pointing out what I thought was the standout of this FF based on the general context of the site. That is the reason, I look at the entries and why this site is unique. I’m not criticizing any of the other entries I’m just stating that, in my opinion, the Thor FF had a larger volume of quality illustrations and believe your point about the character being less popular is perfectly valid. I don’t mean to slight any of the artists as many of them have previously contributed artwork I have very much enjoyed. I happen to think your entry is very good (and I wish I could use colour so effectively) and I’m, sorry if you feel under-appreciated but I shouldn’t have to explain myself for what was in no way a criticism of any of the artists here. Picking people up on innocuous comments don’t bode well when one runs into actual criticism.

  16. Great stuff as usual but both of Gemser’s pieces get my top pick. I’m actually not such a huge fan of Dimayuga’s, there’s too much stuff going on design- and color-wise and there’s isn’t a strong element to bring it all together. Still awesome though.

Thanks for the love and Erech, I’m still trying to figure out a decent way to get prints of my stuff to people out there. We’ll see.

Lastly, I do think there is some confusion with the art and who they belong to. Maybe adding a line in between every art-artist segment will solve this?

  17. Agreed Sebastian, I think Gemser’s pieces are very nice. And he’s an artist I would definitely follow to see what else he can do. Dimayaga’s is nice, and while I agree that there is a lot going on, it would fit very nicely in DC’s nu52. It’s executed very well. Thomas Fummo’s piece is another winner. Always a pleasure to see his stuff. I think he captured Damian (although a little older than how I see him) nicely.
