Superheroes, Redesigned

P:R Redesign: Tony Aros’ Wonder Woman!

Note: We’ve been getting more Justice League related redesigns than ever, and today’s entry rose to the top of the heap. In this design, Tony Aros reinterprets DC’s leading lady into a more classic approach harkening back to her Themiscyran roots. Tony’s thrown in alot of unique elements that play well with each other, and I’d love to see more of this design in action! Check below the art for Tony’s thoughts on the design, then go to his blog where he’s been busy redesigning the rest of the JLA as well as other heroes. – Chris A.

Here’s what Tony had to say about his approach:

With this redesign I was mainly trying to “de-cheezify” her a little bit, while keeping her both feminine and bad-ass.  I dropped the gold from her look because I just don’t like gold, and instead replaced it with silver.  Her toga signifies her Greek connection, as well as hearkening to the Amazonian practice of mastectomy.  I was mainly trying to imagine what an Amazonian warrior would want to wear to fight, and this is what I pictured.  I had a lot of fun with this one.

P:R Redesign: George Kambadais’ Justice League of America

Note: The artist of last month’s winter X-Men piece is back with a cohesive redesign of DC’s Justice League. George Kambadais has taken DC’s premiere super-team and turned them from an informal grouping of solo heroes to a unified force for good (and for fashion). Go after the jump to see detailed close-ups of each character. – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Cliff Chiang’s Justice League of Japan!

Note: For an artist working full-time in super-hero comics, sometimes when you have some free time you want to experiment. Wonder Woman artist Cliff Chiang did just that a few years back with a series of illustrations imagining a band of Japanese superheroes inspired by the heroes of the Justice League. In what Chiang describes as a mix of DC, old school anime and kaiju, this take was almost greenlit by DC a years ago. Just imagine. – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: Rob Nix’ Justice League!

Note: Although he’s not finished on the colors, I couldn’t wait in showing off this sooped-up take on DC’s Justice League by artist Rob Nix. I love seeing him borrow elements from across each character’s long history to create these gestalt designs, especially Wonder Woman’s. I’m unconvinced about the Green Lantern design, but tell us what you think about them all.  Go below the jump to see more detailed renderings of Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman. – Chris A.

Redesign Rewind: Mike McKone’s Secret Society of Super-Heroes!

Note: Out of a dusty back issue bin comes this week’s Redesign Rewind, taking a second look at the DC Elseworlds miniseries Secret Society of Super-Heroes from 2000. Illustrated by Mike McKone, these heroes have some enterprising upgrades to their suits. Superman is the most eye-catching for being so different from his standard duds, but what I liked most was the tunic-style costume of Green Lantern and the more confident Metamorpho redesign. Although never collected in one book, this two-issue series remains cheap on secondary markets and is worth a trip to the back issue bins.- Chris A.

Sketchbook Saturday: Joel Carroll’s Wonder Women!

Note: Wonder Woman has proved to be one of the most popular subjects here at P:R, and P:R Regular Joel Carroll is taking DC’s Amazing Amazon for a 80s-movie style wardrobe fitting in this sextet of designs. Click to embiggen! – Chris A.

P:R Regulars: Joel Priddy!

Note: As a P:R Regular and P:R contributor, Joel Priddy has been a welcome face here on the site. Currently teaching illustration & cartooning at the Memphis College of Art, Priddy has been schooling us for years on his dramatic re-inventions of classic super-heroes.

P:R Redesign: Paulo Siqueira’s Justice League!

Note: There have been a swath of fresh new faces drawing comics in recent years, and one of the ones that have piqued my interest most is Paulo Siqueira with his work on Amazing Spider-Man. For fun, Siqueira is developing his own take on DC’s Justice League which has had some phenomenal entries. The Brazilian artist is only half-way done but I couldn’t wait in showing the P:R readers. – Chris A.

P:R Regular: Joe Quinones!

Note: One of our most popular P:R Regulars in quite some time is artist Joe Quinones. Fresh out of college, Quinones began wowing us here at P:R before he caught the eye of Marvel and DC. Joe has placed high in a number of our contests, and won our spectacular Wonder Woman: Wardrobe War contest a few years back. Thanks, Joe! – Chris A.
