Superheroes, Redesigned

All-Ages All-Stars: Camilo Otálora’s Super Friends!

Note: Part of what makes heroes heroic is the example they make for others. And this piece by Camilo Otálora shows DC’s power trio as free-wheeling children in a heart-warming reimagination of what Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman can be. Today’s spotlighting of this is as much a ‘thumbs up’ to the regular wear design of the heroes as is the illustration Camilo did. Bravo! – Chris A.

P:R Redesign: David Tremary’s Wonder Woman, The Animated Odyssey!

Note: Cliff Chiang and Brian Azzarello’s blazing new take on Wonder Woman in DC’s “New 52″ has earned a cadre of fans including us here at P:R. Turns out that it’s also earned a fan in a professional brand/package designer who does licensed work for Disney, Marvel and other big media companies — David Tremary. Tremary took on DC’s crown princess and dreamt up Wonder Woman: The Animated Odyssey, a slate of character designs for an imaginary animated series based on the designs of Cliff Chiang. Originally intended to be showcased in our earlier Fan-Art Friday: Wonder Woman, we held this back to give this it’s own day in the spotlight. If only this were real! – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Patrick Hollowell’s Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman!

Note: Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are the flag-bearers for the DCU, and artist Patrick Hollowell has taken to updating their costume to modern times. Coming from a similar motivation as the “New 52″ designs, Hollowell’s work took him down a much different path, with some excellent results. – Chris A.

Here’s what Patrick said about his designs:

Batman -Wanted his suit to make his silhouette hard to distinguish other than the ears, especially up against the cape. Put the Symbol over the cape for dramatic effect, like there’s a group of ne’er do wells in a meeting and one of them randomly gets knocked out, they look up and the last thing you see is that haunting yellow bat before you wake up in the hospital. No cod pieces, tired of them damn undies on the outside

Superman – Real heavy up top, sparse below. A bit more yellow than normal but he does most of his work in the daylight and gets his power from the sun so I think it brightens him up a lot more. Draws more attention to his chest where most of his strength lies I believe. And I LOVE the damn Kryptonian collars, gonna get me a suit with one. Same with Bats, gotta get rid of the bikini bottoms, can’t remember who it was, maybe Kirs Anka, but someone pointed out

Wonder Woman – Lots of things to get rid of, the “WW” push up is gone, makes life dangerous for heroines. Titties could be exposed at any moment, easily. Tied up the hair, harder to grab, harder to take down, cuz everyone know Cheetah is an underhanded bitch. No heels, cuz Diana knows better than that, and she’d probably break them mid-battle and that’s no good. Opted for a skirt to keep archaic/feminine vibe. Wanted her to be separate from Superman, so I changed her color scheme to include 2 reds and no gold or yellow, think it looks better with her bands

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s DC Female Super-Team!

Note: We’ve been proud over the years to highlight the work of artist Kris Anka. Years before Marvel took notice and made him one of their primary cover artists, P:R has spotlighted his excllent redesigns of popular characters. And now, Kris is taking his revisions of popular heroes one step further by making a bolsterous new team for the DCU comprised of some of that company’s greatest heroines. Anka hasn’t given them a name — but after Justice League and Justice League of America, why not just keep it simple and call them Justice?- Chris A.

Here’s what Anka said about the casting and the redesigns:

The greatest Team in the world.

Kate. Diana. Eve. Scandal. and Renee.

This started a few weeks ago from an idea I had when talking to a co-worker of mine at Nickelodeon. She and I were remarking how big fans we were of Kate and Diana and that lead to my realization that I would love to do a book with them, plus Eve.

From there I added Starling, because I remembered how much I loved her and the Secret Six.

and Renee, cause when Greg Rucka says a team needs Renee, you better add Renee.

Each costume was redesigned a bit too.

I made Kate a bit more formal. Heavily influenced by Yasmin Liang’s design.

Diana is more or less just a tweak of my older design. I definitely wanted  to keep the Greco Roman Grappler aspect of her. More Wrestler than like a knight. I also wanted to give her a short hair cut, but she ended up  looking better with an epic mane of hair.

Eve more or less is the same. I gave her a cage corset, just cause i like cage dresses. Made her slightly more fashionable.

Scandal I just wanted her too look more Ninja. nothing too large of a change. just some taste stuff.

and Renee, also didn’t have  too much of a change, just gave her a bit more of a designed coat, rather than just a regular suit.

Fan-Art Friday: Wonder Woman!

Note: Wonder Woman is descended from gods, and it looks like she has a almost religious following from the artists who submitted to our Fan-Art Friday. We received over 120 entries into this Fan-Art Friday, including comic professionals, previous P:R contest winners and a host of super-talented newcomers. Look below, and tell us which ones are your favorite and why! – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Colin Alexander’s Wonder Woman!

Note: Superman may have the most powers and Batman may have the most resourcefulness, but I’ve always considered Wonder Woman to be the definite best when it comes to strategy and combat. Artist Colin Alexander‘s design here plays up on that by delivering a more militaristic Diana Prince from her tiara to her vestments, and even giving her a more straight-edge hairstyle. – Chris A.

Last Call For Fan-Art Friday: Wonder Woman Entries!

Note: Today’s the day – the deadline for our Fan-Art Friday: Wonder Woman is today at 1pm Eastern time. Full details can be found on the original post, and we plan to showcase all the entries next Friday! Here’s an old favorite — Daniel Irizarri‘s Wonder Woman for a full-scale JLA redesign he did for P:R. – Chris A.

P:R Approved: Kris Anka’s Wonder Woman!

Note: It’s not the first time Kris Anka‘s taken on Wonder Woman, and hopefully it won’t be the last. This new rendition of Diana Prince shapes her up as a demigod and a warrior. Anka’s work makes the “New 52″ segmented armor work, while leaving room for the character’s own unique accoutrements.  Chris A.

All-Ages All-Stars: Bill Walko’s Wonder Woman Family!

Note: Bill Walko‘s a welcome face here at P:R, and today we welcome him with this exuberant rendition of Wonder Woman and her extended family. Not so much a redesign but a celebration of the different characters and costumes of her time, these six women and ones to be acclaimed. – Chris A.

P:R Regular: Tony Aros!

Note: When Tony Aros won our Shadowman: In A New Light redesign contest, it wasn’t the first time his work has graced our site. Aros’ work has been featured on nine separate occasions, including earning an honorable mention in three of our redesign contests. Today I wanted to bring his work to light once more and show off the excellent pieces Aros’ has done so far. – Chris A.
